V-Groove soft tip cutter designed for V-carving

Wealden's latest design is a two flute TC tipped V-groove soft tip cutter primarily for V-carving material to be painted or foil wrapped. The soft V-point reduces the risk of paint build up in the groove which delays drying time, or gaps below the foil wrap, both of which potentially cause weakness in the finish.

Other applications may include lettering, engraving or decorative designs.

Available to buy on the Wealden website

New spindle block designed for manufacture of 5-piece door set

Wealden have designed this two-part block for the production of five piece cabinet doors with a 6mm panel in 22mm MDF. Thicker panels are suitable if a panel raiser is utilised. It can also be used on solid timber of a similar thickness.

The cutter blocks have exchangeable TC knives in four profiles and blocks are supplied with a guide on how to set the block heights.  Available to buy on the Wealden website.

Wealden design new cutter for J handle handleless drawers

Wealden have designed a new cutter for finger pull mouldings on MDF and timber doors and drawers, which produces a profile with a good grip recess on 18mm or 22mm thick material.

The cutter moulds the recess from the rear of the door and, when used with a separate rear insert, overcomes the difficulty of painting into the finger grip from the front.  Inserts in contrasting materials or colours can be used, offering the opportunity for unique designs and shapes.

A video has been produced to show the cutter in use.  Suitable for use in both hand routers and tables, the cutter is avilable on the Wealden website in the router tooling range.

Wealden launch new range of Flush Groovers

In response to customers' requests, Wealden have just produced a range of Flush Groovers, which have shank-mounted bearings and a flush bottom.

Without a bearing or nut below the cutting edge it is possible to cut down into rebates and above a sub-base etc.  This is especially useful for working on flooring in situ, where a joint or false tongue is required.

The 6.35mm groover is suitable for false tongue work using 6mm ply as the tongue.

The new groovers are available on the Wealden website in the router tooling range.

Fenland Black Oak Project continues...

The Fenland Black Oak Project is in the process of creating an iconic table from an absolutely gigantic black oak tree, which had been buried deep beneath the peat of the Fens for 5,000 years.

The drop leaf sides were originally designed with a conventional tongue and groove joint, as shown in the photo below but, due to the extreme length and therefore weight of each side, a re-think was required and in conjunction with Wealden Tools a special joint was designed.

Wealden have just delivered the special cutters to Hamish Low of the Fenland Black Oak Project and a short video of Hamish illustrating the new joint can be viewed here:

Wealden are delighted to share the vision to preserve this ancient tree for the nation by donating all the cutters used in the machining and working of this vast table.

Wealden design new Arris Round Miniature Bearing cutters

We've just designed some new two flute TC tipped cutters for arrising in confined grooves. The top edge of the cutter has a taper after the radius to produce a soft edge to the cut without the need for any additional finishing. The 6mm bearing allows radiusing on tight corners or in narrow grooves.

The new cutters are available online now in 8mm shank size.

New - heavy duty 50mm chamfering blocks added to spindle range

The latest addition to Wealden's spinde tooling range are these heavy duty steel swop-tip© chamfering heads, featuring 50mm replaceable TC knives with scoring spurs at both ends of the knife.

The chamfer blade holders are adjusted by means of a knurled ring which simultaneously rotates both sides, keeping them synchronised by means of a geared mechanism. The cutting blades can be adjusted from the vertical downwards for 84 degrees or upwards for 48 degrees and are infinitely adjustable within this range. The arrangement of the cutter with spurs also allows the block to cut rebates either square or at an angle.  One rotation of the ring changes the angle by 10 degrees and the ring is marked in 10 graduations of 1 degree.

Available to buy online at the website.

Wealden launch high performance 4Grip collet range for CNC machines

Tool life and cutter performance are greatly influenced by the fit and rigidity of the cutter in the toolholder. This, in turn, is totally dependent on the collet.  It follows therefore that as much of the collet as possible should be in contact with the cutter. On standard collets there can be as many as 16 slits in the collet to allow compression and, therefore, a large proportion of the circumference of the cutter is not in contact with the collet.
Wealden's new high performance 4Grip collets have a maximum of 8 slits, ensuring that the ratio of slit area to collet area on the circumference of the cutter is greater. This is particularly important on smaller diameter cutters, as the slit area will be a much greater percentage of the cutting tool shank. This increased grip will be noticed especially in a significant reduction in noise levels whilst cutting.

Wealden Tools proud to sponsor the Fenland Black Oak Project

In 2012 a Fenland farmer's plough hit an absolutely gigantic black oak tree, which had been buried deep beneath the peat for 5,000 years.  Black oak is by far the nation's most ancient, rarest and valuable native hardwood and at over 13 metres long, the Jubilee Oak is a giant amongst giants.

It was immediately recognised there was a need to preserve such a rare discovery.  With no budget and against all the odds companies were approached to support this unique project.  A vast sawmill was flown over from Canada and, astonishingly, the tree produced 10 magnificent sequential boards unlike anything seen before.

The boards were transported to the Building Crafts College in Stratford, East London, where a specifically designed  14 metre drying kiln had been constructed.  Nine months later 397 gallons of water had been extracted, the boards' weight had been reduced by 1.6 tons and ten breathtakingly beautiful flat and true sequential boards of 13.2 metre long appeared.

This was a unique creative opportunity and a team of dedicated craftspeople decided to try and preserve the full length of this exceptional Fenland giant for the nation by creating an iconic table.

BO_8.jpg

Techniques have been developed to enable the individual shapes and character of the boards to be  used and highlighted.

The design team have called this technique the ‘river joint’ which, while reflecting this most prominent Fenland feature, also enables the true story of the ancient high forests to be told at a glance.

It has been agreed that the table can be displayed in all its sculptural magnificence in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, known as the Ship of the Fens, and a fitting place as it sits on high ground surrounded by fields which, very occasionally, still yield buried ancient black oaks.

1 to 20 scale model of completed table. The top, 13.2 metres long, 1.5 metres wide and made up of 4 full length 'bookmatched' planks

All the successes of the project to date are due entirely to the skill, dedication and commitment of a host of individuals and companies, local, national and international, who have so generously given sponsorship in the form of goods, services and time.

Wealden are delighted to share the vision to preserve this ancient tree for the nation by donating all the cutters used in the machining and working of this vast table.
